I considered the Harley race tuner to be an attractive option, but since I currently plan no more engine mods I opted for the Stage 1 download (dealer-installed for $78--more on that later). The list price on the air kit is $139, but I found it on Zanotti's web site for $108 plus shipping and I placed the order.

The HD engines do run a little hot coming off the factory, due to the lean condition set up to keep within emissions requirements. I think it's more of an issue with the 103' and higher engines, and less so with the 96' or 88' ones. I have a 2010 Road Glide with the 96', and the heat wasn't really all that bad, except in stop and go traffic.
What a lot of HD riders do is swap out the stock exhaust for a cat-less one - by removing the catalytic converter the heat does go down. But there are potential warranty issues since you are now changing the stock EPA-compliant set up. I've heard that some exhaust is ceramic coated both on the inside and out, and that is supposed to reduce the radiant heat coming off the exhaust.
You mentioned an oil cooler - I did that - it does help reduce the oil temperature which is helpful for the engine. I am not sure it does much for the heat coming off the engine though.
Overall, the heat is there, but all bikes are going to be hot, and it's manageable.

Harley Stage One Download Review
I am new to Harley ownership having recently purchased a 2010 Street Bob.
My bike is in standard trim apart from a sprung seat.
I have yet to finish running it in (it had less than 200 miles when I picked it up). I wasn't planning on spending loads on it immediately - just want to enjoy it for what it is.
However, unfortunately the Harley 'bug' has bitten!
Although the stock exhaust sounds OK - I do crave the 'Harley sound'.
I have read wise words on here already...................I know many people just put on slip ons and live with the apparent 'auto fueling adjustments' that the fuel injection system can make - apparently!
It does seem sensible though to do the job properly and go for a 'Stage 1'. Obviously this is where many people baulk at the cost of it all and go for slip ons.
Soooo...........................If I splash out my hard earned on such a tuning upgrade, what real benefits will I see/feel in my new steed?
What are the downsides to doing this?
